PRS Internship

The Virginia Partnership for Gaming and Health (VPGH) is part of the Department of Rehabilitation Counseling, housed in the College of Health Professions at Virginia Commonwealth University. Peer Recovery Specialists with VPGH function as a role model to peers, exhibit competency in personal recovery and use of coping skills, serve as an advocate, provide consumer information and peer support to individuals affected by gambling harm, including connecting them to other support services. The PRS performs a wide range of tasks to assist peers of all ages, from young adult to old age, to regain independence within the community and mastery over their own recovery process. As part of the 500 hours of peer supervision to satisfy the requirements of PRS certification, the volunteer position provides services under the supervision of a CPRS and other staff at VPGH.

Typical Duties can include the following:

• Connect support seekers to treatment/recovery services
• Provide ongoing support and follow up with treatment/recovery plans
• Assist in peer support groups with assigned support seekers on a regular basis
• Support/assist support seekers in decision making and resolution of minor problems
• Assist clients by finding resources, advising the support seeker of processes, and encouraging
  follow through with proposed resolutions, locating social activities, or provide other assistance
  as needed
• Accompany support seekers to meetings and participate in meetings of community groups to
  advocate for support seeker needs, leading recovery dialogues/self-help sessions with clients
• Model effective coping and self-help techniques to individuals or groups of support seekers
• Inform clients on community resources and how to use them appropriately and provide
  information to support seekers and families on specific topics, as assigned
• Assist with development of community resources

Minimum Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED or equivalent
• Completion of the 72-hour Peer Recovery Specialist (PRS) training.
• Must complete a minimum of fifteen (15) hours of problem gambling specific training (provided
  by VPGH)
