We are excited to announce that applications are now open for the Level 1 Peer Recovery Specialist (PRS) Internship Program through George Mason University’s Empowered Communities initiative! The Peer Recovery Specialist (PRS) Workforce Program at George Mason University (GMU) is designed to:

Prepare the next generation of peer recovery specialists. This initiative, developed in collaboration with community organizations, offers a comprehensive blend of classroom instruction, experiential learning, and mentorship. Our goal is to equip trainees with the skills and knowledge necessary to support individuals facing substance use and mental health challenges. Program Structure
This rigorous program consists of two progressive levels designed to enhance the skills and competencies of trainees supporting those with substance use and mental health challenges.

Overview for Trainee

This 9-month, paid internship is designed for individuals who want to use their lived experience in mental health and/or substance use recovery to support others while gaining hands-on training and professional experience.

Level I: Pre-service Internship

  • Duration: 9 months
  • Stipend: $6,000
  •  Experiential Learning: 500 hours at a designated preceptor site
  • Classroom Training: Comprehensive certification preparation covering foundational skills, ethics, communication, career planning, and readiness for the PRS Certification Exam.
  • Opportunities available statewide in Virginia

Important dates:

  •  Applications are open now through May 15
  • Interviews will begin in March

Program start date: Wednesday, August 12, 2026
